The SMA fiber adapter is designed to ensure accurate mating between SMA fiber connectors while ensuring minimized insertion loss. This style of fiber optic adapter typically comes with two structures. One utilizes a copper sleeve to ensure precise alignment of ferrules within fiber optic connectors. The other comes without a sleeve and directly connects the fiber connector with the hole in it.
SMA fiber adapter has lower accuracy requirement than SC type. Most SMA fiber optic patch cords are multimode patch cords, and thus SMA fiber optic adapters are mostly multimode version as well. This range of fiber optic assemblies is mostly used in optical communications system and various test instruments, especially on military equipment and medical equipment.
